I've run the video player and played the demo mpeg file. I wonder if the
application can play mpeg2 file by replacing the demo file, flight.mpeg.

That version may support it, but you might google
for dvdview and see whether the original author has added
support for mpeg2. It's easy to try - compile PIXIL for
the linux desktop and run it from the command line.
